The PSC Explained
The Public Service Commission is composed of seven members, one from each Congressional District. They are selected to serve four year terms by the General Assembly. A four year college degree is required as well as preferred expertise in energy; telecommunications; consumer protection and advocacy; water and wastewater; finance, economics and statistics; accounting; engineering or law. The salary is approximately $130,000 a year.
Commission seats representing Congressional Districts 1, 3, 5, and 7 are up for selection in 2020.
Commission seats representing Congressional Districts 2, 4, and 6 were selected in 2018 and 2019 and serve until July of 2022.
Another state entity, the Public Utility Review Committee (PURC), screens candidates for the Commission and provides a list of qualified candidates to the General Assembly.
